Celebrity Jewellery Watch: Period and Antique Engagement Rings

Friday, June 18th, 2010

It would seem that period and antique engagement rings are becoming increasingly popular with international celebrities.

Perhaps the first to kick off this recent trend was Welsh beauty Catherine Zeta Jones, who in 2000 received a ten carat antique marquise cut diamond engagement ring dating from the 1920s from Michael Douglas, with an estimated value of around two million dollars. Though not of Hollywood fame, in 2005 Camilla Parker Bowles was given an Art Deco diamond ring by Prince Charles. Set with a central emerald cut diamond flanked by six diamond baguettes, it was once owned by the Queen Mother. Another family heirloom, Scottish actor Ross McCall proposed to American actress Jennifer Love-Hewitt in 2007 with an antique diamond ring that had been in his family for over one hundred years. The following year another American starlet, Scarlett Johansson, became engaged to actor Ryan Reynolds with an antique cushion cut diamond solitaire on a gold band. And in late 2009, the Spanish pair Penelope Cruz and Javier Barden became engaged, the ring being an antique sapphire and diamond cluster ring on a gold band, all the stones in collet settings. Finally, just this year British comedian David Walliams proposed to his Dutch supermodel girlfriend, Lara Stone, with a period ring dating from the 1930s composed of a diamond centre stone with diamond set shoulders.

It is no surprise that the world’s most stylish women are wearing antique engagement rings, as they will ever be a fashionable yet timeless choice.

How to Design Your Own Pearl Necklace

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Since inexpensive freshwater pearls cultured in China became easy to obtain in the early 2000s, jewelry designers have been exploring design possibilities for pearl necklaces, bracelets and earrings that depart from the classic design of uniform strands of pearls knotted in silk. By using your creativity and keeping certain technical details in mind, you can design your own pearl necklace that is formal or casual, elegant or rustic…in fact, suitable to any style you please.
Step 1
Examine the variety of pearls available to you to select the ones you will use when you design your own pearl necklace. While some pearls are natural, most affordable freshwater pearls on the market are dyed. Cultured freshwater pearls come in colors ranging from pure white to midnight blue. As the technology of culturing pearls has evolved to include seeding pearls with non-traditional inorganic shapes, jewelry designers are seeing more pearls in free-form shapes, as well as stick pearls and coin pearls (flat pearls in circular, square, triangular or other shapes).

Step 2
Select your other beads with practicality in mind, taking into account how pearls differ from stone, glass, wood, plastic and other bead types. As organic substances covered by a delicate nacre, or iridescent layer, pearls are vulnerable to light, water and friction. Set adjacent to rough stones, pearls will get abraded over time. Knot the beading cord between the pearls and other stones to solve this problem.

Step 3
Select your beading or stringing wire in an equally practical spirit. Pearls are drilled with very fine holes. Use beading wire, silk cord or gold or sterling silver wire that is fine enough to fit the pearls’ drill holes, in addition to the drill holes of your other beads. Make sure that the drill holes are the right size for the beading wire when you design your pearl necklace.

Step 4
Explore contrast in designing the layout of your pearl necklace strand. Pearls stand out when paired with contrasting surface textures, such as those of gemstone beads, sterling silver beads and even bone beads. The delicate pastels, neutrals, and jewel tones of cultured freshwater pearls contrast well with glittering faceted Czech glass, Swarovsky crystals, or garnet, amethyst or other transparent and semi-transparent faceted semiprecious gemstones. Contrast in size and shape is also effective: use seed pearls in place of regular spacer beads, or fashion a small graduated array of stick pearls as an impromptu pendant in the center of your strand.

Step 5
Lay out the pearls and other beads on a beading board or towel to see how the design looks. Fasten a clasp–and choose a clasp that matches the design in both size and style–only after you’re sure the design will work in practice as well as in theory. Sometimes seeing the design of your beaded necklace laid out reveals design flaws.

Cufflinks styles

Friday, June 11th, 2010

The breath of freedom has resulted in numerous styles and designs nowadays. There is something unique and special for everyone. The sophisticated lovers of classics can enjoy, for instance, precious red gold with pink mother of pearl cufflinks, crowned with a tiny diamond. Minimalist clear forms appear to be timeless and precious. The simple geometric forms of cufflinks are very much appealing to today’s men.

However, new forms and materials are increasingly used by many contemporary designers to gradually accustom males to more courageous view of jewelry. Today, the brothers Villa, Italian jewelers, are renowned as kings in the world of cufflinks. They state that a gentleman should have a vast number of cufflinks, various in design and manifold in number. Apart from traditional ones, a serious man collection can well include intricate cufflinks, for instance, gold elephants, owlets and so on. Even a portrait of a special person can be engraved for a cufflinks owner.

In short, men can use the quantitative jewelry minimalism to their advantage and succeed in creating of that unique, groomed and well-dressed gent image as far as they manage to put accents in a style-conscious way. And we, their better half, are always ready to render a skilful helping hand if necessary… or even a neck, masterfully decorated with a gorgeous diamond necklace.

Woman jewelry rules

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The choice of accessories is a very personal affair, it’s very important that you feel comfortable and in harmony with what you wear. But jewelry is a very special thing that require thorough consideration and good taste. Here are our expert advise on how to make the most of the jewelry:

Woman jewelry rules:

1. Remember “one-statement-at-a-time” rule. It means that you should balance your jewelry items. For example, a dramatic necklace requires modest earrings and vice versa. Similarly, if you don’t want to look like a Christmas tree, avoid wearing more than one massive and bold ring at a time. The combination of 2 or 3 discreet rings is ok within the good-taste limits. The same is for the bracelets. But then do not wear a necklace.

Jewelry sets are traditional gifts. They usually include matching necklace, ear-rings, a bracelet and a ring. Do not wear them all at once.

A necklace is good together with a ring, and ear-rings are a fabulous match for a bracelet. You can compliment them with a wedding ring.

2. Face shape and hair style have an influence on what to wear.

For instance, massive ear-rings look out of place if you have a small face with fine features or short-cut hair. Hair worn piled up is a fabulous opportunity to wear long drop or dangly earrings.

3. Consider your age when choosing the stones and metals that can work best for you.

The good options for a young girl are some strings of pearls, corals, turquoise a-la russe (i.e. set in silver or gold).

More mature ladies are free to wear all possible precious stones.

As to the metals, it’s up to you what to choose taking your taste, hair and eye-color into account. But on the whole, silver jewelry is considered to be an every-day thing, not appropriate for formal and special occasions.

You can combine silver and gold jewelry. But think thoroughly over the combination. For example, silver and gold chains can liven a dark dress up. Never combine a silver necklace with a gold bracelet.
