Tips for Wearing Your Jewelry

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

The immaculate sense of style is not necessarily something that you should be born with. It is brought up consciously, developed by paying attention to the ocean of current fashion trends where you find something that suits your looks, personality and lifestyles.

Creating your own style is not a “bed of roses”. This road can be full of faux pauses and trials. But those who want to be a success in this venture are destined to success.

It‘s a piece of hard work, let’s face it, unless you have your personal make-up artist, clothes and hair-stylist at your hand 24/7. But the award of realizing that you look and feel great is worth of all the efforts.
Nobody is perfect. And we can’t control what Nature has given to us. But everybody can make the best over him/herself, learning to be beautiful and express the unique individuality that is within.

Since jewelry is fairly considered to be that very special thing that both gives that necessary finishing touches to our looks and boosts our good mood as well as self-esteem, let’s exercise in wearing jewelry. If you are not always sure what gems suit you best, or what to wear in a particular occasion, it’s never too late to learn…

Well, where the jewelry is concerned, the basic criteria are your Age, Height and Build.

Earrings

If your height is equal to that of the current fashion standard and besides you can boast of having a fine swan neck, don’t hesitate to wear long dangling earrings. They look especially good in a company of smooth hair.

If, in contrast ,you are petite and not too high, your friends are small earrings that will not look like weights on you. Chunky “button” earrings esp. with a gem are fabulous on a plump lady with lush hair-style.

Rings

Rings are the piece of jewelry so much preferred by many women both for its aesthetic value and symbolic meaning. Slim diamond rings are commonly worn on a ring-finger. Never put on 2 or more rings on the same finger. Rings with a gem of more than 10k are usually worn on a fore-finger. Besides, the best option for young ladies with slim arms and fingers is something adequate- a small exquisite 2k ring.

Bracelets

Bracelets are worn only on the right hand. If it consists of some segments without a gem in the centre, wear it loose on your arm. And, conversely, if a bracelet is adorned with gems centering it, don’t let it dangle on your arm.

Brooches

Brooches are very much in fashion today. Well, to put it right, brooches are everywhere this year. Again, young girls choose small-sized ones. Single “flowers” or something like that are worn on the left side, 10-15cm below the shoulder or at the collar. Massive brooches can serve as the collar links. Best of all, diamonds match one-colored dresses, preferably – a black one. But in case there are some plain buttons on your dress, the brooch should be 5-7cm. higher. You can fold a light scarf and pin it up with the brooch. You want something extravagant – wear the brooch on the waist line, provided the design of your dress doesn’t object to it.

Never wear diamond brooches on the coat collar, on denim or leather jackets. Neither it can be a good company for casual, knitted or sports clothes.

Necklaces and pendants

As far as necklaces and pendants are concerned, the major dilemma is whether to wear them with high-necked or low-cut dresses. The liberty of your own decision is well within the limits of good taste. Experiment – and decide what works best for you.

And, finally, let’s work out how we can combine different pieces of jewelry. If you have a jewelry set, consisting of a bracelet, ring, necklace and earrings, follow the next principle ‘earrings+ bracelet”, “necklace+ ring”. Avoid wearing more than 2 rings at a time. It looks too excessive. As far as diamonds go, this gem is predominantly for evening wear.

Photographing Jewelry Tips

Friday, July 10th, 2009

Photographing jewelry is an important skill for jewelry artists. Although there are many challenges involved in jewelry photography, you can easily get some really professional looking photos using good scanners or digital cameras.

To sell your jewelry online – from your website, eBay or other online auctions, or web stores – you’ll need to post good, clear pictures of your work. You’ll also need good jewelry photos for your business card and any flyers, brochures, or other marketing pieces you make. In online business pictures represent your product.

Photographing Jewelry with a Scanner

photographing-jewelry-tipsUse a scanner for photographing jewelry, it’s really a great and simple tool for quickly getting beautiful, artistic shots. You don’t need to be a camera buff to get good results with scanners. Basically two-dimensional jewelry is easy to shoot this way. You can get wonderful photos of earrings, necklaces, and other pieces that can be laid flat on the scanner glass.

For most pieces, you can easily work within the capabilities of scanners and get professional looking jewelry photos. It’s hard to shoot three-dimensional pieces.

With a scanner, you can’t easily get good pictures of things that don’t show to their best advantage when lying flat. “Standing up” shots of rings and cuff bracelets are nearly impossible to photograph with a scanner. You’ll get a much better shot of these using a digital camera.

There are some simple techniques used by the professional to obtain dramatic results with minimal effort. The following examples show the basic setup that should allow anyone to achieve results they can be proud of.

1. The keys to good jewelry photography are sharpness, lighting, exposure, and in the case of gemstone photography, trying to create some sparkle.
2. Good jewelry photography needs sharp, crisp focus.
3. Another key to good jewelry photography is the lighting.
4. Proper exposure is also key to good jewelry photography.

Pearls – Buying Guide

Monday, June 15th, 2009

pearlsPearls are one of the few organic precious gemstones, and they begin life as a particle of grit or other debris that becomes embedded inside the shell of a marine or freshwater mollusc such as a clam or oyster. This triggers a defensive mechanism in the mollusc to protects its soft, vulnerable interior and the particle is covered by layers of the substance used normally to coat the inside of the shell which is called nacre (mother of pearl). This process continues until the particle is totally smooth and covered, and results in a beautifully formed circular object called a pearl.

Natural pearls are rare, and so are quite expensive and sold by carat weight. Many of the natural pearls you see on today’s market are in fact vintage pearls, as modern jewelry is usually crafted from the more readily available cultured pearls. Cultured pearls are made by manually introducing a particle of grit to a suitable mollusc, and the shape and size of the pearl can be manipulated by what type of mollusc is used, what water it lives in and also how long the pearl is left before it is harvested. The longer a pearl is left, the harder and thicker the layers of nacre become, and so the larger the pearl generally the higher the quality and expense, and cultured pearls are sold by millimetres rather than karats.

Pearl Shapes
The traditional pearl used in jewelry is spherical in shape, and the rounder and more perfect the sphere the more expensive and desirable the pearl is. You can also get teardrop shaped pearls and baroque pearls, which are those that have an irregular shape, and although these are less expensive they are often very unique and can be very beautiful in their own right.

Guidelines for Buying Diamonds : Technical Aspects of Diamonds

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

three-stone-diamond-ringThe word Diamond comes from the Greek word ‘adamas’. The hardest known substance known to mankind is diamond. The beauty of a faceted diamond depends upon many factors. To a name a few factors based on which diamonds are bought are 4 Cs: Cut, Clarity, Carat, and Color. But the value of the natural color diamond usually depends on the rarity of its color than on any of the other 3 Cs, including carat weight. This is because some colors occur in a wide range of sizes and shapes, while others are rare even in the smallest sizes.

Since natural color diamonds come in such a wide range of colors and no two are identical, it is difficult to develop a grading system that can capture the special character of each individual stone. Experts at both the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI) have three parameters by which they describe color for these exquisite diamonds:

Hue is one of the main attributes and plays an important role. Hue refers to the dominant color of the stone, such as pink, blue, or yellow. There can also be modifiers, or tints, which impart more one color to a stone. For instance, a purplish-pink diamond indicates a stone with a principal pink hue and a slight purple tint. If no modifiers or tints exist in a stone, then the hue is said to be pure.

Tone refers to how much lightness or darkness a stone appears to retain. Tones can range from light to dark. In case of diamonds the more the diamond is able to reflect the light back, the better quality it is.

Saturation describes the strength and intensity of the hue. The saturation of light diamonds can vary from pastel to vivid to intense. Dark diamonds can range in saturation from dark to deep.

Muriel Hurtis Jewelry Tips

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

1. Never sleep, shower, garden or clean while wearing your jewelry.  You’re more likely to loosen the setting which could lead to missing stones.

2. Swimming in a pool with jewelry is bad for the metal.  The chlorine can corrode the settings and give gold a dull look.

3. Only polish jewelry with 100% cotton.  Your best bet is a polishing cloth or soft flannel because it won’t scratch the metal.

4. Don’t clean pearls, turquoise, amber, lapis, coral, emeralds, mother of pearl, or silver with ultrasonic cleaners.  You’ll damage them.

5. Keep certain stones away from sunlight and intense heat if possible; they will fade over time.  The list includes amethyst, ametrine, apatite, aquamarine, aventurine, beryl, citrine, green and purple fluorite, kunzite, and smoky or rose quartz.

6. Bleach eats sauter for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Keep your hands inside gloves or remove your jewelry before using it.  Your settings and stones will thank you later.

7. Store silver away from humid environments like bathrooms.  Silver tarnishes much more quickly in a wet environment.  To keep it in top shape, store it in an air tight container.

8. Make sure to store your pearl necklaces flat.  Silk stretches over time.

9. Choose pieces with a lower karat weight (10 karat and 14 karat) for rings if you’re going to wear it more often.  It will be less likely to scratch.

10. Give jewelry as a gift and celebrate important milestones in your life by rewarding yourself with a special piece.  Every time the piece is worn, it will act as a reminder offering encouragement and support.
